March 4th, 2012
February 21, 2012
Many thanks to all who came out this month. We had the Matthews family on banjo, fiddle, percussion and vocals, Matt Presson on wash tub bass, Grant Hunnicutt on mandolin, and Steven Buoni on guitar.
The March installment features some classics and a couple of curve balls starting with Tom Waits.

One of the great singer-songwriters of the 20th/21st century, Waits writes romps, ballads, jailhouse rockers, tin pan romance and a few fabulous gospel songs. This one I fine especially appropriate for Lent:
Way Down in the Hole (Opening Hymn)
Tom Waits
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ymBaAsSqDE&feature=related
(Dm) When you walk through the garden
you gotta watch your back
well I beg your (Gm) pardon
walk the straight and narrow (Dm)
if you walk with (Dm) Jesus
he’s gonna save your soul
you gotta keep the devil (A7)
way down in the (Dm) hole
he’s got the fire and the fury
at his command
well you don’t have to worry
if you hold on to Jesus hand
we’ll all be safe from Satan
when the thunder rolls
just gotta help me keep the devil
way down in the hole
All the angels sing about Jesus’ mighty sword
and they’ll shield you with their wings
and keep you close to the lord
don’t pay heed to temptation
for his hands are so cold
you gotta help me keep the devil
way down in the hole
The next two numbers are classic Bill Monroe. Can’t go wrong with the inventor of Bluegrass!

The Old Cross Roads (In between the Readings)
Bill Monroe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYlFfVM_yV8
(G) O my brother take this warning
Don’t let old (D7) Satan hold your (G)hand
You’ll be lost in sin forever
You’ll never (D7) reach the Promised (G) Land
(G) The Old Crossroads is waiting
Which one are you (D7) going to (G) take
(G) One leads down to destruction
the other (D7)to the Pearly (G) Gate
(G) One road leads up to Heaven
The other one (D7) goes down (G) below
(G) Jesus our Savior will protect you
He’ll guide you (D7) by the old cross (G) road
(G) The Old Crossroads is waiting
Which one are you (D7) going to (G) take
(G) One leads down to destruction
the other (D7)to the Pearly (G) Gate
Soon your life will be over
You’ll have to face the old crossroads
Will you be ready then my brother
To shun the one that goes down below
(G) The Old Crossroads is waiting
Which one are you (D7) going to (G) take
(G) One leads down to destruction
the other (D7)to the Pearly (G) Gate
Remember the Cross (Offertory Hymn)
Bill Monroe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6vrLhCELMs
(D) Do you think of the cross on (G)which Jesus (D) died
Of the blood He shed for (A7) you
(D) Are you prepared to meet Him in that (G) land of (D) love
By His word are you (A7) going to (D) abide
(D) Remember the cross on (G) which Jesus (D) died
Follow in His footsteps each (A7) day
(D)He shed His blood for you and He (G) shed His blood for (D) me
Never cast that (A7) cross (D) aside
Never let other people lead you astray
Teach His words to them if you can
They must think of that cross on which Jesus died
And get ready to meet Him someday
(D) Remember the cross on (G) which Jesus (D) died
Follow in His footsteps each (A7) day
(D)He shed His blood for you and He (G) shed His blood for (D) me
Never cast that (A7) cross (D) aside
When Jesus comes down from heaven above
And you haven’t thought of that cross
He’ll cast you aside in the twinkling of an eye
And you won’t see His blessed home of love
(D) Remember the cross on (G) which Jesus (D) died
Follow in His footsteps each (A7) day
(D)He shed His blood for you and He (G) shed His blood for (D) me
Never cast that (A7) cross (D) aside
This next song was introduced to by my friend Rich who told me to check out Iris Dement’s album: ‘Lifeline.’ Not only is this a great album, this song in particular is perfect for Lent. Of couse, it’s written by the fabulous, ubiquitous Fanny Crosby.
Near the Cross (Communion Hymn)
Fanny Crosby
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5ps_S82ylE
(D)Jesus, keep me (G) near the cross,
(D) There a precious (A7) fountain
(D) Free to all, (G) a healing stream
(D) Flows from Calvary’s (A7) mountain (D)
Chorus:
(D) In the cross, (G) in the cross,
(F)Be my glory ever (A7);
(D)Till my raptured (G) soul shall (D)find
(D)Rest beyond the (A7)river (D)
Near the cross, a trembling soul,
Love and Mercy found me;
There the bright and morning star
Sheds its beams around me.
Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day,
With its shadows o’er me.
Near the cross I’ll watch and wait
Hoping, trusting ever,
Till I reach the golden strand,
Just beyond the river.
The last song of the evening is by Billy Joe Shaver –one of the greatest Country Songwriters of all time. Like a Waylon Jennings song? It’s probably Billy Joe. And boy oh boy, this man loves Jesus.
Get Behind Thee Satan (Closing Hymn)
http://music.yahoo.com/videos/Billy+Joe+Shaver/Get+Thee+Behind+Me+Satan–45592279
Chorus
(A) Get thee behind me Satan
(D) For I command it in the (A) name of the Lord Jesus (E) Christ, of Nazareth
(A) Get thee behind me Satan
(D) For I command it in the (A) name of the (E) Lord Jesus (A)
(A) I looked into the mirror and (D)I couldn’t see myself
(A) The demons that were in me had (E) turned me wrong side out
(A) I knew inside my soul I was (D)headed straight for (A) hell
(A) But I couldn’t for my life figure how (E) to help (A) myself
(A) Get thee behind me Satan
(D) For I command it in the (A) name of the Lord Jesus (E) Christ, of Nazareth
(A) Get thee behind me Satan
(D) For I command it in the (A) name of the (E) Lord Jesus (A)
The moon and stars were hidden by the shroud that clouded ’round
I could see my loved ones weeping as they lowered me in the ground
No word was spoken over me I almost thought I died
Then I knew I wasn’t dead I had been buried alive
(A) Get thee behind me Satan
(D) For I command it in the (A) name of the Lord Jesus (E) Christ, of Nazareth
(A) Get thee behind me Satan
(D) For I command it in the (A) name of the (E) Lord Jesus (A)
I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face
I knew that I was buried in the deepest darkest place
The deeds that I had done put me in this awful place
Then I felt the stir inside me and the smoke came ‘cross my face
(A) Get thee behind me Satan
(D) For I command it in the (A) name of the Lord Jesus (E) Christ, of Nazareth
(A) Get thee behind me Satan
(D) For I command it in the (A) name of the (E) Lord Jesus (A)
Hope to see you on the first Sunday in March so we can chase the devil away and do together what no one should ever give up for Lent: Sing!

January 8, 2012
This month’s program is based upon recent requests from the congregation and a couple that I’ve just been meaning to fit in.
The first tune is a Hank Williams gospel song. One never needs an excuse to play Hank. As Kinky Friedman would say: “Hank Williams…(is the) hillbilly Shakespeare.”
(I’m Gonna) Sing, Sing, Sing
Hank Williams
version by Hank Williams Jr: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnTXl3AD2Ok
Chorus:
(D)When I get to Glory, I’m gonna sing, sing, sing
I’m gonna let the (E7) hallelujahs ring (A7)
(D) I’m gonna praise my blessed Saviour’s name
When I get to Glory, I’m Gonna (A7) sing, sing, sing. (D)
In this world of sorrow, I’ve seen trouble and woe
When I get to Glory I’ll see no more
For I know my prayers have not been in vain
When I get to Glory, I’m gonna sing, sing, sing.
[Chorus]
Sometimes I get so weary inside
Then I recall how my Jesus died
Up there I know, there’ll be no pain
When I get to Glory, I’m gonna sing, sing, sing.
[Chorus]
Up there no tears will blind my eyes
And I’ll walk along by my Jesus’ side
I’ll meet my loved ones all once again
When I get to Glory, I’m Gonna sing, sing, sing.
[Chorus]
“More Carter Family” was requested last month from a couple of different folks. The two songs I chose I first heard on the Sara and Maybelle Carter “An Historic Reunion” record, released on Columbia in 1966. ‘Higher Ground’ was written by Johnson Oatman, a Methodist Episcopal minister who wrote lyrics to over 5,000 gospel songs. ‘Farther On’ is a beautiful little tune written by Sara Carter, and sent to her family on one of her annual Christmas home-recordings on which she would sing songs, and talk about raising peacocks in California.
Higher Ground (Between the Readings)
Johnson Oatman, Jr., 1898
(D) I want to live above the world (G)
Tho’ satan’s darts (D) at me are hurled (A7)
(D) For faith has caught the joyful sound (G)
Lord plant my (D) feet on (A7) higher ground (D)
Chorus:
(D) Lord, lift me up and let me stand (A7)
By faith on heaven’s table land (D)
A higher plane than I have found (G)
Lord, plant my (D) feet on (A7) higher (D) ground.
I want to scale the utmost height
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till heav’n I’ve found,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”
Chorus
My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay
Tho’ some may dwell where these
abound
My prayer, my aim is higher ground.
Chorus
I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I’m onward bound,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”
Chorus
Farther On (Offertory Hymn)
Sara Carter
(G) When the gloom of night surrounds you
wait with (C) patience for the dawn
if you tread the Christian’s pathway (G)
light will cheer you (D) farther on (G)
(G) Farther On Farther On (D) All the shadows will be gone (G)
falter not oh weary brother joy is coming (D) farther on (G)
Farther on this toilsome journey
every trial will repay
Faint not then oh weary brother
as you travel on your way
Farther On Farther On All the shadows will be gone
Falter not oh weary brother joy is coming farther on
Farther On Farther On All the shadows will be gone
Falter not oh weary brother joy is coming farther on
‘Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior’ is a special request from a Bluegrass Mass attendee. The song was written the famous Fanny Crosby who wrote over 8,000 gospel songs and hymns during the premiere gospel song period: 1870-1920. She had so many songs published in fact, she used over 200 pen names so as to bypass publishing house reluctance to print so many songs by one individual. We’ve visited her work before with ‘Blessed Assurance.’
Pass me not, O gentle Savior (Communion Hymn)
Fanny Crosby
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFkgAj2hEEc
(G) Pass me not, O gentle Savior,
(D) Hear my humble cry; (D7)
(G) While on others Thou art calling,
(D7) Do not pass me by. (G)
Refrain
(G) Savior, (C) Savior,
(G) Hear my humble (D7) cry;
(G) While on others Thou art calling,
(D7) Do not pass me by. (G)
Let me at Thy throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief,
Kneeling there in deep contrition;
Help my unbelief.
Refrain
Trusting only in Thy merit,
Would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.
Refrain
Thou the Spring of all my comfort,
More than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee?
Whom in Heav’n but Thee?
Refrain
The following tune: ‘Jesus on the Mainline’ was requested by my Mother-in-law. I’ve been a fan of it ever since I first heard a rendition on Ry Cooder’s 1974 release: ‘Paradise and Lunch.’ It’s a traditional spiritual and has been sung by a wide spectrum of artists.
Jesus on The Mainline (Closing Hymn)
version by Ry Cooder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebj_e4VagcA&feature=related
(G) I know Jesus is on that mainline
Tell Him what you want
(C) Jesus is on that mainline

Well, if you’re sick and wanna get well
Tell Him what you want
Well, if you’re sick and you wanna get well
Tell Him what you want
If you’re sick and you wanna get well
Tell Him what you want

Hope to see you Sunday the 5th!

This installment of the St. Thomas Bluegrass Mass is based around my favorite Christmas album: ‘Odetta : Christmas Spirituals,’ released on Vanguard in 1960. The program of this record was compiled by Odetta, Ned Wright and Milton Okun. As the liner notes read: “The songs here brought together…most of them spirituals born in the years of slavery and struggle against it.

Odetta Holmes, (December 31, 1930 – December 2, 2008), was an American folk singer with a classical voice background. She was a major influential force in The Civil Rights Movement and the Folk Revival of the 50′s and 60′s.

November 24, 2011
This month I’ll be joined by Grant Hunnicutt, Nate Mathews and James Eggleston.
We’ve prepared a mix of songs, some Christmas themed, some appropriate to the liturgy, all classics.
‘Don’t you hear Jerusalem Moan’ I first heard sung by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Don’t You Hear Jerusalem Moan ~ Opening Hymn
G
Well I got a home on the other shore
Don’t you hear Jerusalem moan
I know I’ll live there forever more
D G
Don’t you hear Jerusalem moan
Chorus
G D
Don’t you hear Jerusalem moan, don’t you hear Jerusalem moan
G
Thank God there’s a Heaven and a ringin’ in my soul
and my soul set free
G D G
Don’t you hear Jerusalem moan
Well now Sister Mary she wears a chain
Don’t you hear Jerusalem moan
And on every link is a Jesus’ name
Don’t you hear Jerusalem moan
Chorus
The devil wears a hypocrite shoe
Don’t you hear Jerusalem moan
you don’t watch out he’s gonna step ‘em on you
Don’t you hear Jerusalem moan
Chorus
Now the Methodist preacher is a mighty fine man
Don’t you hear Jerusalem moan
Showin’ us the way to the promised land
Don’t you hear Jerusalem moan
Chorus
‘Get Up John’ is one of the few songs I know written about John the Baptist (instead of Evangelist). It’s a great tune to jam on, and Ricky Scaggs, who plays this number, is one of the kings of the Bluegrass Jam.
Get up John ~ Between Readings Hymn
G
Well get up John go down to Jordan
Get up John prepare the way
Man from Galilee is waiting
You must meet him there today
Get up John go tell my people
This will be a Holy day
Tell them of the Jew that’s waiting
That the Saviors on the way
John
Even the children
John
Go Unafraid
John
I’ll go with you
John The Baptist
This is the day
Well get up John go tell Jerusalem
Savior’s waiting on the shore
Baptize Him in the River Jordan
I’ll send a dove from Heaven’s door
John
Even the children
John
Go Unafraid
John
I’ll go with you
John The Baptist
This is the day
Well get up John your work is finished
Daylight breaks the soldiers come
You will die for me tomorrow
Welcome home your race is run
John
You’ve been chosen
John
Go Unafraid
John
I’ll go with you
John The Baptist
This is the day
For the Christmas spirit we move to a traditional song made popular by Flatt and Scruggs, among others. The fact that it’s not as popular as other endlessly played holiday classics, may be attributed to it’s somewhat lonesome tone.
Where Will I Shelter My Sheep Tonight ~ Offertory Hymn
G C G
Where will I shelter my sheep tonight
G D
Where is that peaceful land
G C G
Where will I shelter my sheep tonight
G D G
Where the beasts won’t steal my lambs
C G
We’ve travelled far shepherd dog and I
D
Weary sin sick and sore
G C G
Where will I shelter my sheep tonight
G D G
I’ll shelter my sheep at God’s door
instrumental break
My soul is weak and thirsty too
As I cross these burning sands
Where will I shelter my sheep tonight
Where is that peaceful land
We’ve travelled far shepherd dog and I
Weary sin sick and sore
Where will I shelter my sheep tonight
I’ll shelter my sheep at God’s door
This next song is a favorite of mine. It also falls under the Christmas song canon. I’ve heard great versions by Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, and The Seeger Sisters (Peggy below).

Bright Morning Star Rising ~ Communion Hymn
G
Bright morning stars are rising,
D
Bright morning stars are rising,
G
Bright morning stars are rising,
D
Day is a-breaking
G
in my soul.
Oh, where are our dear mothers,
Oh, where are our dear mothers,
Day is a-breaking in my soul.
They are down in the valley praying,
Day is a-breaking in my soul.
Oh where are our dear father
Oh where are our dear fathers,
Day is a-breaking in my soul.
They have gone to heaven shouting,
Day is a-breaking in my soul.
Bright morning stars are rising,’
Bright morning stars are rising,
Bright morning stars are rising,
Day is a-breaking in my soul.
‘Walking The King’s Highway’ fit so nicely into the program, I couldn’t help myself. Plus, it’s a classic Carter Family tune that we haven’t explored yet.

The King’s Highway ~ Closing Hymn
F
We shall see the desert as the rose
C
Walking in the kings highway
F
There’ll be singing where salvation goes
C F
Walking in the kings highway
There’s a highway there and away
Where sorrow shall flee away
And the light shines bright as the day
Walking in the kings highway
We shall see the glory of the lord
Walking in the kings highway
And behold the glory of his work
Walking in the kings highway
There the rain shall fall upon the ground
Walking in the kings highway
And the springs of water shall be found
Walking in the kings highway
No unclean things shall pass or hear
Walking in the kings highway
Just the ransom ones without a fear
Walking in the kings highway
Hope to see you on Sunday the 4th, dressed down and ready to sing up!

Grant Hunnicutt
When Susan Daughtry approached Antonia and me about leading the Bluegrass Mass at St. Thomas, the first thing I did, after saying yes, was to call my friend Grant Hunnicutt– aficionado of all things Bluegrass and new-fangled / old timey. He made two mixtapes for me– one straight Bluegrass, the other Gospel Bluegrass. These are the recordings that Antonia and I have listened to on our way to and from each Bluegrass Mass to date. Not only are the songs for this installment culled from these mixes, but Grant Hunnicutt himself will be performing with us on Sunday, November 6th.
I Want the Lord to Protect My Soul
performed on the mixtape by Bill Monroe
(F) I want the lord to protect my soul
To lead me (Bb) on to heavens door (F)
My life down here will soon be o’er
And I want the (C) lord to protect my soul (F)
Down lifes highway alone I’ve trod
I’ve always put my trust in god
But you’ll find out that you’re silver and gold
Won’t pay the price to protect your soul
I want the lord to protect my soul
To lead me on to heavens door
My life down here will soon be o’er
And I want the lord to protect my soul
There’s many a church down life’s highway
Where people sing rejoice and pray
I’ll stop at one and join the fold
And ask the lord to protect my soul
I want the lord to protect my soul
To lead me on to heavens door
My life down here will soon be o’er
And I want the lord to protect my soul
When this old world is doomed in sin
You’ll cry oh lord please lest me in
It will be to late to make it o’er
To ask the lord to protect your soul
I want the lord to protect my soul
To lead me on to heavens door
My life down here will soon be o’er
And I want the lord to protect my soul
I’ll Meet you in Church Sunday Morning
Performed on the mixtape by Bill Monroe
(D) On Sunday, when the church bells start ringin’ (G)
(D) They’re ringin’ for you and for me (A)
(D) Let’s all kneel down at the altar (G)
(D) And pray that our (A) souls might be free (D).
CHORUS:
I’ll meet you in church Sunday morning
And we’ll all kneel down and pray
We’ll pray to our Lord up in heaven
To guide us safe home on our way.
It’s a place where we all meet on Sunday
To worship our Lord up above
And let all of our sins be forgiven
And meet with our loved ones above.
Repeat chorus
In heaven I hear a voice callin’
From the land where there’s one endless day
Let’s all be prepared to meet Jesus
The path is narrow to that home far away.
Repeat chorus
I Like to Hear Him Preach It
Performed on the mixtape by Jimmy Martin
(D) I like to hear them preach it
(G) I like to hear them pray (D)
I like to hear them talk about the (E) good ole’ gospel way (D)
They read it from the Bible
(G) And they all begin to shout (D)
And I’m convinced that’s one thing that (A) we can’t live without (D)
Verse #1
I was a non-believer , I didn’t believe in God
I was always sinnin’ as upon this earth I trod
Since I found them sinners now I am not alone
Salvation is the only way that you can get home
Verse #2
I’d sit way back in the church and I bowed my head
And when they’d start to praying I’d do just as they did
Well I never even closed my eyes I’d listen to their prayers
And since that time I found out that God is everywhere
Verse #3
There’s people who look for bargains downtown in the stores
Denying God in all his glory and all that he stands for.
Now I don’t know about deduction, but there’s on thing that I know
That God can only bargain as you onward go
White Dove
Performed on the mixtape by The Stanley Brothers
(E) In the deep rolling hills of old Virginia (A)
(E) There’s a place that I love so well (B)
(E) Where I spent many days of my childhood (A)
(E) In the cabin where we (B) loved to dwell (E)
(E) White dove will mourn in sorrow (A)
(E) The willows will (B) hang their heads (E)
I’ll live my life in sorrow (A)
(E) Since mother and (B) daddy are dead (E)
We were all so happy there together
In our peaceful little mountain home
But the Savior needs angels up in heaven
Now they sing around the great white throne
As the years roll by I often wonder
If we will all be together someday
And each night as I wander through the graveyard
Darkness finds me as I kneel to pray
I’m Going to Make Heaven My Home
Performed on the mixtape by Flatt and Scruggs
(G) For many long years (C) through this world i have roamed (G)
Not thinking of the day last to come (D)
(G) But now i have changed and i (C) want the world to know (G)
That i’m going to make (D) heaven my home (G)
Chorus;
(C) I’m going to make heaven my (G) homesweet home
(C) I’m left in this world all alone (D)
(G) No mother or dad i’ve (C) lost all i had (G)
And i’m going to make (D) heaven my home (G)
The nights seem so lonely around the cabin home
No mother left to guide us along
But on that golden strand i’ll take her by the hand
For i’m going to make heaven my home
There’s things in this old world that’s so hard to understand
Why you have to lose the one you love so
But it’s wonderful to know when you leave this world below
That your going to make heaven my home

Well, the hurricane washed out the last Bluegrass Mass of the summer. The good news is, the folks at St. Thomas have been kind enough to ask us to perform a Bluegrass mass year-round on the first Sunday of the month! So here we go!!
Calling You (all — opening hymn)
Hank Williams, Sr.
When you’ve strayed from the fold
And there’s trouble in your soul
Can’t you hear the blessed Saviour calling you?
When your soul is lost in sin
And you’re at your journey’s end
Can’t you hear the blessed Saviour calling you?
CHORUS
Calling you, (calling you)
Calling you, (calling you)
Can’t you hear the blessed Saviour calling you?
He will take you by the hand
Lead you to that promised land
Can’t you hear the blessed Saviour calling you?
As you journey day by day
And temptation comes your way
Can’t you hear the blessed Saviour calling you?
If you’ll follow in His light
He will always guide you right
Can’t you hear the blessed Saviour calling you?
CHORUS
When your soul is burdened down
And your friends can not be found
Can’t you hear the blessed Saviour calling you?
If you’ll follow Him each day
He will brighten up your way
Can’t you hear the blessed Saviour calling you?
CHORUS
Church in the wildwood (all — hymn between the readings)
William S. Pitts
There’s a church in the valley by the wildwood
No lovelier place in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale
CHORUS
Oh, come, come, come, come,
Come to the church in the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale
How sweet on a clear Sabbath morning
To listen to the clear ringing bell
Its tones so sweetly are calling
Oh, come to the church in the dale
CHORUS
There, close by the side of the loved one
‘Neath the tree where the wild flowers bloom
She sleeps, sweet love sleeps, ‘neath the willow
Disturb not her rest in the tomb
CHORUS
Angel Band (all — offertory hymn)
My latest sun is sinking fast
My race is nearly run
My longest trials now are past
My triumph has begun
CHORUS
Oh come angel band
Come and around me stand
Bear me away on your snow white wings
To my immortal home
Bear me away on you snow white wings
To my immortal home
Oh bear my longing soul to him
Who bled and died for me
Whose blood now cleanses from all sins
And brings me victory
CHORUS
I know I’m near the holy ranks
Of friends and kindred dear
I brush the dew on Jordan’s banks
The crossing must be near
CHORUS
I’ve almost gained my heavenly home
My spirit loudly sings
The holy ones, behold they come
I hear the noise of wings
CHORUS
In The Sweet By and By (communion anthem)
lyrics by S. Fillmore Bennett, music by Joseph P. Webster
There’s a land that is fairer than day,
And by faith we can see it afar;
For the Father waits over the way
To prepare us a dwelling place there.
CHORUS
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore;
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.
We shall sing on that beautiful shore
The melodious songs of the blessed;
And our spirits shall sorrow no more,
Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.
CHORUS
To our bountiful Father above,
We will offer our tribute of praise
For the glorious gift of His love
And the blessings that hallow our days.
CHORUS
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms (communion anthem)
Lyrics by Elisha A. Hoffman, music by Anthony J. Showalter
What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
leaning on the everlasting arms;
what a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
CHORUS
Leaning, leaning,
safe and secure from all alarms;
leaning, leaning,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
leaning on the everlasting arms;
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
CHORUS
What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
leaning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
CHORUS
Turn Your Radio On (all — closing hymn)y Albert E. Brumley
Come and listen in to a radio station
Where the mighty hosts of heaven sing
Turn your radio on turn your radio on
If you want to hear the songs of Zion coming
From the land of endless spring
Get in touch with God turn your radio on
Turn your radio on turn your radio on

And the many friends gone before

When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder (all — communion hymn)
James M. Black
When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair;
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
CHORUS
When the roll is called up yonder,
When the roll is called up yonder,
When the roll is called up yonder,
When the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise,
And the glory of His resurrection share
When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
CHORUS
Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care;
Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

It was great to have Nate Matthews back with us this past week! Together with Arlen and Josiah, we sounded like a bona fide band.
A large number of folks were good enough to brave the storm and lend their voices and enthusiasm to the mix.
Next week is our last scheduled Bluegrass Mass. For the final program we’ll be doing an extended sing of favorites from throughout the summer series.

From June 12th

Tonight it was great to have Arlen back in the gr0up! He brought along his bowed psaltery and auto-harp. With Josiah on banjo, and Antonia on accordion we played through a crowd-pleasing set of old hymns.
The program for next Sunday includes the last five songs to be introduced this summer. The last performance 8.28 will be an overview of some of the more popular songs from the second half of our residency.
The opening hymn is an old one–written on an overnight horseback ride by circuit preacher, J.K. Alwood, in 1890. My favorite rendition of “Unclouded Day” is by John Fahey on the record “Blind Joe Death.”
Unclouded Day
lyrics and music Josiah K. Alwood
O they (F) tell me of a home far be(Bb)yond the skies, (F)
O they tell me of a home far away; (C)
O they (F) tell me of a home where no storm (Bb) clouds rise, (F)
O they tell me of an un(C) clouded day. (F)
CHORUS
(F) O the land of cloudless day,
O the land of an unclouded day, (C)
(F) O they tell me of a home where no storm (Bb) clouds rise, (F)
O they tell me of an un(C)clouded day. (F)
O they tell me of a home where my friends have gone,
O they tell me of that land far away,
Where the tree of life in eternal bloom
Sheds its fragrance through the unclouded day.
CHORUS
O they tell me of a King in His beauty there,
And they tell me that mine eyes shall behold
Where He sits on the throne that is whiter than snow,
In the city that is made of gold.
CHORUS
O they tell me that He smiles on His children there,
And His smile drives their sorrows all away;
And they tell me that no tears ever come again
In that lovely land of unclouded day.
CHORUS
The gospel song, ‘Palms of Victory,’ also called ‘Deliverance Will Come,’ and ‘The Way-worn Traveler, is attributed to the Rev. John B. Matthias, a Methodist Episcopal minister in New York state. It was written in 1836. My favorite version is by Trio: Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.
Deliverance Will Come
John B. Matthias
I (E) saw a wayworn traveler, in (B) tattered garments clad, (E)
And struggling up the mountain, it seemed that (B) he was sad (E);
His back was laden heavy, his (B) strength was almost (E) gone,
Yet he shouted as he journeyed, “Deliver(B)ance will (E) come!”
CHORUS
(E) Then palms of victory, (B) crowns of (E) glory,
Palms of victory (B) I shall wear. (E)
The summer sun was shining, the sweat was on his brow,
His garments worn and dusty, his step seemed very slow;
But he kept pressing onward, for he was wending home,
Still shouting as he journeyed, “Deliverance will come!”
CHORUS
The songsters in the arbor that stood beside the way
Attracted his attention, inviting his delay:
His watchword being “Onward!” he stopped his ears and ran,
Still shouting as he journeyed, “Deliverance will come!”
CHORUS
I saw him in the evening; the sun was bending low;
He’d overtopped the mountain, and reached the vale below:
He saw the Golden City—his everlasting home—
And shouted loud, “Hosanna! Deliverance will come!”
CHORUS
While gazing on that city, just o’er the narrow flood,
A band of holy angels came from the throne of God;
They bore him on their pinions safe o’er the dashing foam,
And joined him in his triumph: Deliverance had come!
CHORUS
I heard the song of triumph they sang upon that shore,
Saying, “Jesus has redeemed us to suffer nevermore!”
Then casting his eyes backward on the race which he had run,
He shouted loud, “Hosanna! Deliverance has come!”
CHORUS
The offertory hymn is a popular British spiritual originating in the early 18th century. It became a huge hit for Burl Ives in the 40s.
Wayfaring Stranger
I am a (Am) poor wayfaring stranger,
While traveling (Dm) through this world of woe. (Am)
Yet there’s no sickness, toil nor danger
In that bright (Dm) world to which I go. (Am)
I’m going there (F) to see my Father (C);
I’m going there (F) no more to roam. (E)
CHORUS
I’m only (Am) going over Jordan,
I’m only (Dm) going over home.
I know dark clouds will gather round me;
I know my way is rough and steep.
But golden fields lie out before me
Where God’s redeemed shall ever sleep.
I’m going there to see my mother,
She said she’d meet me when I come.
CHORUS
I’ll soon be free from every trial,
My body sleep in the churchyard;
I’ll drop the cross of self denial
And enter on my great reward.
I’m going there to see my Savior,
To sing His praise forevermore.
CHORUS
The Communi0n Hymn is a favorite of Antonia’s. It has lately had popularity through use in the film: ‘True Grit.’ I first heard it on ‘The David Grisman Rounder Record.’

Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand
Eiland/Wilson
(F) Time is filled with swift transition,
Naught of earth unmoved can (C) stand,
(F) Build your hopes on things eternal, (Dm)
(F) Hold to God’s unchang(C)ing hand. (F)
CHORUS
Hold to God’s unchanging hand,
Hold to God’s unchanging (C) hand;
(F) Build your hopes on things eternal, (Dm)
(F) Hold to God’s (C) unchanging hand. (F)
Trust in Him who will not leave you,
Whatsoever years may bring,
If by earthly friends forsaken
Still more closely to Him cling.
CHORUS
Covet not this world’s vain riches
That so rapidly decay,
Seek to gain the heav’nly treasures,
They will never pass away.
CHORUS
When your journey is completed,
If to God you have been true,
Fair and bright the home in glory
Your enraptured soul will view.
The closing hymn is a request from Josiah, and I’m really glad he made it. The song is by Townes Van Zandt: one of the great American songwriters of the 20th century–0ne of my heroes.
Two Hands
CHORUS:
I got (F) two hands
I wanna clap (Bb) my hands together (F)
I got two legs
I wanna (C) dance to heavens door
I got (F) one heart
I’m gonna (Bb) fill it up with Jesus (F)
and I ain’t gonna think about (C) trouble anymore (F)
(F) Well now this old world (Bb) sometimes it does get lonesome (F)
and its many a grown man has (C) hung his head and cried
(F) down in your soul there’s (Bb) one that won’t desert you (F)
ain’t it fine to have the (C) Savior by your side (F)
CHORUS
now the Lord resides inside a house of golden
and faith is the door and love is the key
and warm is the light pouring from his mighty windows
and that light, my friend, it shines on you and me
CHORUS
When the wind blows on that faithful morning
and I close my eyes, Lord, and fly my body home
I don’t want my friends to cry no tears about me
I’ll be bathing in the glory of the throne
CHORUS
I’m looking forward to next Sunday! Hope to see you at St. Thomas,

Wow. I think this past Sunday was a record for us! Not only did Josh, Josiah and Martin join us again, but our friends Chris Kasper and Kiley Ryan, down from Philadelphia, lent their talents as well. We had, two fiddles, two guitars, a dulcimer, a banjo, accordion, and National Steel!
The first hymn this week is “The Old Rugged Cross”–a Methodist hymn written in 1912 by evangelist George Bennard (1873-1958) in Albion, Michigan. One of my favorite renditions is by the country great: George Jones–what a voice!
Old Rugged Cross
George Bennard
(F) On a hill far away stood an (Bb) old rugged cross,
the (C7) emblem of suffering and shame; (F)
and I (F) love that old cross where the (Bb) dearest and best
for a (C7) world of lost sinners was slain. (F)
CHORUS
(C7) So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, (F)
till my (Bb) trophies at last I lay down; (F)
I will cling to the old rugged cross, (Bb)
and exchange it some (C7) day for a crown. (F)
O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
has a wondrous attraction for me;
for the dear Lamb of God left his glory above
to bear it to dark Calvary.
CHORUS
In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
a wondrous beauty I see,
for ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
to pardon and sanctify me.
CHORUS
To that old rugged cross I will ever be true,
its shame and reproach gladly bear;
then he’ll call me some day to my home far away,
where his glory forever I’ll share.
CHORUS
The second hymn this week dates back to 1893. Another standard played by everyone, I first heard it sung by one of my all-time favorites: Willie Nelson.
When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder
James M. Black
When the (G) trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and (C) time shall be no more, (G)
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair; (D)
When the (G) saved of earth shall gather (C) over on the other shore, (G)
And the roll is called up (D7) yonder, I’ll be there. (G)
CHORUS
(G) When the roll is called up yonder,
When the (D7) roll is called up yonder,
When the (G) roll is called up (C) yonder,
When the (G) roll is called up (D7) yonder, I’ll be there. (G)
On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise,
And the glory of His resurrection share;
When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
CHORUS
Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care;
Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
CHORUS
The offertory is a classic beauty. “Angel Band” predates the Civil War. It was written from the poem “My Latest Sun Is Sinking Fast” by William Batchelder Bradbury and put to music by Jefferson Hascall. Oddly enough I used to sing along to this tune as sung by The Monkees and coming from my portable casstte player/recorder.
Angel Band
My (G) latest sun is (C) sinking fast (G)
My race is (D7)nearly run (G)
My (G) longest trials (C) now are past (G)
My triumph (D7) has begun (G)
CHORUS
(D7) Oh come (G) angel band
(D7) Come and (G) around me stand
(C) Bear me away on your (G) snow white wings
To (D7) my immortal home (G)
(C) Bear me away on you (G) snow white wings
To (D7) my immortal home (G)
Oh bear my longing soul to him
Who bled and died for me
Whose blood now cleanses from all sins
And brings me victory
CHORUS
I know I’m near the holy ranks
Of friends and kindred dear
I brush the dew on Jordan’s banks
The crossing must be near
CHORUS
I’ve almost gained my heavenly home
My spirit loudly sings
The holy ones, behold they come
I hear the noise of wings
CHORUS
The next tune is one that Antonia and I love to sing. In fact, we named our band after it! It is also a special request from the congregation. It was written by the Reverend Guy Smith and first recorded by Roy Acuff in 1936:
The Great Speckled Bird
(F) What a beautiful thought I am thinking (Bb)
(C7) Concerning a great speckled bird (F)
(F) Remember her name is recorded (Bb)
On the (C7) pages of God’s Holy Word. (F)
All the other birds are flocking ’round her
And she is despised by the squad
But the great speckled bird in the Bible
Is one with the great church of God.
All the other churches are against her
They envy her glory and fame
They hate her because she is chosen
And has not denied Jesus’ name.
Desiring to lower her standard
They watch every move that she makes
They long to find fault with her teachings
But really they find no mistake.
She is spreading her wings for a journey
She’s going to leave by and by
When the trumpet shall sound in the morning
She’ll rise and go up in the sky.
In the presence of all her despisers
With a song never uttered before
She will rise and be gone in a moment
Till the great tribulation is o’er.
I am glad I have learned of her meekness
I am proud that my name is on her book
For I want to be one never fearing
The face of my Savior to look.
When He cometh descending from heaven
On the cloud that He writes in His Word
I’ll be joyfully carried to meet Him
On the wings of that great speckled bird.
The closing hymn is typically a slow song. However, we decided to see what happens when we speed it up! Words by Alexander Means, music by William Walker, 1835.
Wondrous Love
lyrics Alexander Means
(Dm) What wondrous (C) love is this (Am), (Em) O my soul,(Dm) O my soul! (Em)
What (C) wondrous love is (Am) this, (C) O my soul! (Dm)
What wondrous (F) love is this (Dm) that (C) caused the Lord (Am) of bliss (Dm)
To bear the (C) dreadful curse (Am) for my(Em) soul, (Dm) for my soul, (Em)
(Am) To bear the dreadful curse (Em) for my soul (Dm).
When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown,
Christ laid aside His crown for my soul, for my soul,
Christ laid aside His crown for my soul.
To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing;
To God and to the Lamb, I will sing.
To God and to the Lamb Who is the great “I Am”;
While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing;
While millions join the theme, I will sing.
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on;
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on.
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be;
And through eternity, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on;
And through eternity, I’ll sing on.
Hope to see you at St. Thomas on Sunday!

A great big thanks to Grant Hunnicutt for joining us this past week. His mandolin and harmonies filled out the group’s sound nicely (I now include Josiah when I refer to the group). Grant has a solo record coming out this fall.
This week we have Chris Kasper joining us from Philadelphia PA. The program is full of more songs that Antonia and I have wanted to play during this residency but haven’t necessarily fit the readings. The last month of our St. Thomas stay has begun, however, and we’re gonna play what we’re gonna play!
The opening hymn is a crowd pleaser, especially since popular resurgence from prominence in the film ‘O’ Brother Where Art Thou.’ This song was written by the great Albert E. Brumley, who wrote over 600 hymns during his career, including the opener from last week: ‘Turn Your Radio On.’ The Chuck Wagon Gang’s 1948 recording of the tune for sold over one-million copies which makes it one of the top selling gospel records of all-time.
I’ll Fly Away
Albert E. Brumley
(F) Some glad morning when this life is o’er,
(Bb) I’ll fly (F) away;
To a home on God’s celestial shore,
I’ll (C7) fly (F) away.
CHORUS
I’ll fly away, oh glory,
I’ll fly away;
when I die, hallelujah, by and by,
I’ll fly away.
When the shadows of this life have grown,
I’ll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I’ll fly away.
CHORUS
Just a few more weary days and then,
I’ll fly away;
to a land where joys shall never end,
I’ll fly away.
CHORUS
The next hymn is older than ages, of unknown origin, and has been recorded by just about everybody. It gained popularity during the Civil Rights Movement as ‘We Shall Not be Moved.’ I first heard it on a Charley Patton recording.
I shall not be moved
traditional
(E) I shall not be, (B) I shall not be moved
(B) I shall not be, (E) I shall not be moved
Just like a (A) tree that’s growin’ in the (E) meadow (down by the water)
(E) I shall (B) not be (E) moved
I’m on my way to glory land and I shall not be moved
On my way to glory land I will not be moved
I’m like a tree that’s planted by the water
I shall not be moved
CHORUS
I shall not be, I shall not be moved
I shall not be, I shall not be moved
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water
I shall not be moved
Well I’m on my way to glory land and I shall not be moved
On my way to glory land I shall not be moved
I’m like a tree that’s planted by the water
I shall not be moved
CHORUS
On this rock of ages, I shall not be moved
On this rock of ages, I shall not be moved
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water
I shall not be moved
Glory Hallelujah, I shall not be moved
Glory Hallelujah, I shall not be moved
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water
I shall not be moved
The offertory hymn is an all time favorite of mine by Ralph Stanley. The proper name is “Going Up Home to Live in Green Pastures.” I first heard it as sung by Emmylou Harris and Ricky Scaggs:
Green Pastures
Ralph Stanley
(A) Troubles and (D) tri (A) als (D) often (G) betray those,
On in the (D) weary body to (A) stray.
But we shall (D) walk (A) be (D) side the still (G) waters,
With the Good (D) Shepherd (A) leading the (D) way.
CHORUS
Going up home to live in green pastures,
Where we shall live and die never more.
Even The Lord will be in that number,
When we shall reach that heavenly shore.
Those who have strayed were sought by the Master;
He who once gave His life for the sheep.
Out on the mountain, still He is searching:
Bringing them in forever to keep.
CHORUS
We will not heed the voice of the stranger,
For he would lead us on to despair.
Following on with Jesus, our saviour,
We shall all reach that country so fair.
CHORUS
The Communion Anthem I have mixed emotions about. I absolutely love the song. It’s a beauty. However, I first heard it sung by Robert Mitchum as a wolf in sheep’s clothing in the film: ‘Night of the Hunter.’ The song was co-written by Anthony J. Showalter and Elisha A. Hoffman in 1887.
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
Lyrics by Elisha A. Hoffman, music by Anthony J. Showalter
(G) What a fellowship, (C) what a joy divine,
(G) leaning on the everlasting (D) arms;
(G) what a blessedness, (C) what a peace is mine,
(G) leaning on the ever(D)lasting (G) arms.
CHORUS
(G) Leaning, (C) leaning,
(G) safe and secure from all (D) alarms;
(G) leaning, (C) leaning,
(G) leaning on the ever(D)lasting (G)arms.
O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
leaning on the everlasting arms;
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
CHORUS
What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
leaning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
CHORUS
The closing hymn is an old traditional gospel song, dating back to its first known recording in 1927 by David Miller. I first heard it as sung by Mississippi John Hurt.
Lonesome Valley
traditional
CHORUS
(G) You gotta walk that lonesome valley
And you gotta (D) walk, walk it by your(G)self
Nobody (C) else can walk it for (G) you
You gotta (G) walk, (D) walk it by your(G)self.
Jesus walked this lonesome valley
And he had to walk it by Himself
Nobody else could walk it for Him
He had to walk, walk it by Himself.
CHORUS
You must go and stand your trials
You have to stand it by yourself
Nobody else can stand it for you
You have to stand it by yourself.
CHORUS
Some folks say that old John was a baptist
Some folks say he was a Jew
But the Bible claim, it plainly tells us
That old Johnny was a preacher, too.
CHORUS
Hope to see you on Sunday: dressed down, laid back, and singing out!
-Jonathan
